Huacarpay RAMSAR Wetland is a birding paradise in Cusco, Peru. With its stunning scenery and unique birdlife, birding in Huacarpay is a must-do activity for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers alike. Home to over 100 bird species, including Rusty-fronted Canastero (E), Bearded Mountaneer (E), Andean flamingo, Puna Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, Puna Ibis, Cinnamon teal, Andean Tinamou, and some times Darwin´s Nothura this wetland is a birding hotspot. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced birder, you’ll be amazed at the diverse range of bird species found in Huacarpay.

Early morning we leave Cusco towars east searching for the remanent water of the ancient lake in Cuzco, Huacarpay. Well known for it´s importance due to the variety of habitats that Huacarpay englobes: dry intermontane valley with scrubs, The andean lake with marshes and rush, and a section full of Nicotiana sp. (Tobaco!) flowers. In adittion Huacarpay receives year after year several migratory birds. The place is suitable for a variety of water fowl, hummingbirds, few endemics and the largest hummer in the world. Puna Tinamou, Yellow Billed Pintail, Puna Teal, Andean Lapwing, Plumbeous Rail, Andean Negrito, White-tufted Greebe, Puna Ibis as well as Bearded Mountaneer (Endemic), Rusty fronted Canastero (Endemic), Giant Hummingbird, Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Streak-fronted Thronbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Andean Lapwing, White crested Elaenia,Variable Hawk and many others.
