Itinerary
Cuzco - Cloud forest
The journey starts early morning in Cusco, Capital of the Incas Empire. The Roads takes us first though inter-montane valleys and wetlands where waterfawl, raptors and wild guinea pigs among others are farily common residents. Later, the pintoresque colonial city of Paucartambo await for us to enjoy their typical streets and temple. After lunch, we will head east and gain height once again to Aqjanaco Pass (2600 masl), the entrance to the famous National Park of Manu, from this point the enviroment changes dramatically since this last portion of the Andes retains the humidity of the Amazon Rainforest. This area is home for Spectacled Bear and Culpeo (Andean fox) as well. After lunch, we will start the drive downhill through a very pristine cloud forest where we can find beauties such as Tchudi´s Wooly Monkey, Golden-headed Quetzal, Hooded Mountain-tanager, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-tanager. At mid-afternoon we will arrive to San Pedro, to visit the most reliable Cock of the Rock Lek, where males come daily to perform courtship displays to atract males, one of the greatest experiences in nature.
Andean Foothills
We start today in San Pedro is located at 1500 meters elevation, lower and warmer than Wayquecha, this is the Cloud Forest itself. The wildlife includes a great diversity of vascular plants, butterflies and hummingbirds comming to the feeders. After driving some time we may start finding macaws, multicolored Tanagers, Toucans and some other species of larger primates such as Spider Monkey or Howler Monkey and arrive to our next lodge at 600 meters elevation right were the Amazon meets the mountains at the foothills of the Andes. We stay tonight at Manu Biolodge (ex Villa Carmen) used to be used as a research center but now is open for tourism,
Manu Biolodge
We leave early morning towards "Machuwasi" an amazonian lake to enjoy the resident aquatic fauna by balsa boats. Hoatzin is probably the highlight here, an awkward bird with a punk-prehistoric look, slugish movements makes it easy to spot. Caimans, capybaras, flycatcher, waterfawl are regularly present in the lake itself. Later we will visit a tower that raises over the forest and walk though some surrounding trails where Capuchin monkeys, Squirrell monkeys or Titi Monkeys use to be found here frequently. We come back towards the lodge for lodge for lunch and spend time in the trails to undesrtand this wonderful and delicate ecosystem or photograph at the hummingbird feeders where the spectaular Rufous-crested Coquette visits the flowers often; you may also choose to enjoy a relaxing time at leassure at the lodge garden.
Back to the mountains
We leave after lunch back to the mountains and stop just in case we missed some wanted species like Cock of the Rock, Quetzal or Trogons. Stop along the way for lunch and get back to Cusco at mid afternoon.
