Trip Outline

🔥 Central Andes Endemics – 5 Days of High-Andean Specialists from Lima

Birding in the Central Andes of Peru offers one of the most efficient opportunities to target a unique set of high-altitude endemics within a short timeframe. Easily accessible from Lima, this region combines Lomas, arid inter-Andean valleys, puna ecosystems, and high-altitude wetlands—each hosting a distinct and specialized avifauna.

This 5-day itinerary is a compact and highly focused birding route designed to maximize key target species while maintaining simple logistics and avoiding internal flights. It is ideal for birders looking to secure important Peruvian endemics without committing to a longer expedition.

🌿 Why Choose This Central Andes Birding Tour?

Unlike broader birding tours in Peru, this itinerary is built around precision and efficiency rather than total species counts.

  • Target a core set of high-Andean endemics in just 5 days
  • Fully land-based, starting and ending in Lima
  • Access a range of habitats from coastal desert to puna and wetlands
  • Designed for serious birders seeking specific lifers with high success rates
  • Ideal as a short standalone tour or extension to longer Peru itineraries

This route is particularly attractive for those who want a focused and productive experience without the complexity of remote Amazonian logistics.

🦜 Target Endemics and Birding Highlights

This Central Andes birding tour focuses on a select group of high-value species, many of them range-restricted or habitat specialists: Junin Rail, Junin Grebe, Black-breasted Hillstar, Great Inca Finch, Thick-billed Miner, Raimondi’s Yellow Finch, Cactus Canastero, Bronze-tailed Comet, White-bellied Cinclodes, Rufous-breasted Warbling Finch, Black-necked Woodpecker, and many more.

These species represent some of the most sought-after birds of the central Andes and coastal Peru, making this itinerary especially rewarding for birders targeting endemic and high-altitude specialists.

🛏️ Comfort and Travel Conditions

This tour offers a practical level of comfort suited to a short, high-performance birding itinerary. Accommodations are simple but clean and well-located, particularly in Junín, where lodging options are limited but strategically close to key birding areas.

Travel is conducted in a private vehicle along established roads, ensuring efficient and comfortable transfers.

Please note that birding takes place at high elevations (often above 4,000 m), with cold temperatures and variable weather, especially in the early mornings.

🗺️ A Compact Route from Coast to High Andes

This itinerary follows a logical ecological progression across western and central Peru:

Lomas de Asia (Coastal Desert) – Thick-billed Miner, Raimondi’s Yellow Finch, Cactus Canastero
Santa Eulalia Valley – Great Inca Finch, Bronze-tailed Comet, Rufous-breasted Warbling Finch
Ticlio & High Andes – Black-breasted Hillstar, White-bellied Cinclodes, Puna specialists
Lago Junín (High-Andean Wetlands) – Junin Rail, Junin Grebe, Many-colored Rush Tyrant

Each zone contributes a distinct set of species, allowing for an efficient accumulation of targets across contrasting habitats.

🚐 Efficient Logistics, Maximum Birding Time

This 5-day tour is designed for operational efficiency and consistent birding performance:

  • Private transportation throughout
  • Predictable travel times on established routes
  • Strategic overnight locations to maximize early-morning birding
  • Carefully planned altitude progression

While the logistics are straightforward, birding takes place at high elevations, and participants should be prepared for conditions above 4,000 meters.

🧭 Tour Concept

This is not a general birding tour—it is a precision-driven itinerary built around a clearly defined set of targets.

Each day is designed to contribute directly to the success of the trip, making this one of the most effective short birding routes in Peru.

Itinerary

Day 1
Lomas de Asia

Lima to Lomas de Asia & Santa Eulalia – Coastal Endemics

We begin our Central Andes birding tour in Lima with an early departure at approximately 5:00 am, heading south along the Panamerican Highway toward the seasonal oasis of Lomas de Asia. These fog-fed hills host a unique set of coastal desert endemics, and we will spend the morning searching for key species such as Thick-billed Miner (E), Raimondi’s Yellow Finch (E), Cactus Canastero (E), Coastal Miner (E), among others.

After a productive morning in the lomas, we return north toward Lima and continue directly into the Andes, ascending to the Santa Eulalia Valley. This scenic route marks the beginning of our transition into inter-Andean habitats and offers opportunities for light birding in the afternoon, depending on time and energy levels.

Although the focus of the day is on coastal species, we may encounter early Andean birds such as Bronze-tailed Comet (E), Black-necked Woodpecker (E), and Rufous-breasted Warbling Finch in suitable habitats along the valley.

This is a longer travel day, but it sets the foundation for the rest of the tour by covering a completely different ecosystem before moving into the high Andes.

Overnight in Santa Eulalia.

Day 2

Santa Eulalia Valley – Great Inca Finch & Dry-Andean Endemics

Today we explore the Santa Eulalia Valley, one of the most important sites in central Peru for dry inter-Andean endemics. We begin early, working a series of carefully selected stops along the valley to maximize our chances of finding key target species.

Our primary goal is the striking Great Inca Finch (E), a highly localized species that inhabits rocky slopes with sparse vegetation. We will also search for Bronze-tailed Comet (E), one of the most distinctive hummingbirds of the central Andes, often found feeding in flowering shrubs along the valley.

Other important species we expect to encounter include Rufous-breasted Warbling Finch (E), Black-necked Woodpecker (E), Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail (E), and Black Metaltail (E). The valley also offers opportunities for Andean Condor, which occasionally soars along the cliffs, as well as Torrent Duck and White-capped Dipper in suitable river sections.

Birding today is done by moving between productive sites rather than continuous walking, allowing us to adapt to activity levels and habitat conditions.

This day plays a key role in securing several of the tour’s core Andean targets before ascending into higher elevations.

Overnight in Santa Eulalia.

Inca-Finch
Day 3
White-bellied-Cinclodes

Santa Eulalia to Ticlio & Junín – High-Andean Specialists

We depart early from Santa Eulalia and ascend into the high Andes, reaching elevations above 4,500 meters. Today is focused on a set of specialized high-altitude species typical of puna grasslands and wetlands.

Our main target is the Black-breasted Hillstar (E), which depends on specific flowering plants found in scattered patches along the route. We will also search for White-bellied Cinclodes (E), Junin Canastero (E), Olivaceous Thornbill, and Puna Ground-Tyrant.

Other notable species include Gray-breasted Seedsnipe, Andean Lapwing, Glacier Finch, and several sierra-finches adapted to these extreme environments.

After working key sites along the high plateau, we continue toward Junín, arriving in the afternoon and positioning ourselves for the following day’s most important targets.

Overnight in Junín.

Day 4

Junin Grebe - Chinchaycocha Lake

We begin early at the wetlands of Lago Junín, one of the most important high-Andean birding sites in Peru. Today is focused on securing the tour’s most critical target species.

Our main objective is the highly localized Junin Rail (E), which inhabits dense reedbeds and requires patience and careful positioning to observe. We will also look for the endemic Junin Grebe (E), usually seen in open water and one of the most reliable species of the tour.

Additional important species include Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Plumbeous Rail, Puna Teal, Andean Lapwing, and Andean Negrito. In suitable areas, we may also encounter Yellow-winged Blackbird, Wren-like Rushbird, and various high-Andean waterfowl.

Birding is conducted by working different sections of the reedbeds and open water, adjusting strategy based on activity levels and conditions.

Overnight in Junín.

Junin Grebe
Day 5
Valle Santa Eulalia

Junín to Lima – Final Birding

We depart early from Junín and begin our return to Lima, with optional birding stops along the high-Andean plateau depending on remaining target species.

This final morning provides an opportunity to reinforce key species such as Black-breasted Hillstar (E), White-bellied Cinclodes (E), and other puna specialists including Ground-Tyrants and sierra-finches. In open areas, we may also encounter Andean Lapwing, Andean Goose, and Variable Hawk.

Birding today is flexible and strategic, focused on completing any missing targets before descending toward the coast.

We arrive in Lima in the afternoon.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

🏔️ What altitudes are reached during this tour?

This tour operates at a wide range of elevations, from sea level at Lomas de Asia to over 4,500 meters (14,700 ft) in the high Andes.

Most birding takes place between 3,000 and 4,200 meters, including key sites around Lago Junín.

Participants should be aware that high altitude can affect energy levels, especially on Days 3 and 4.

🚶‍♂️ How difficult is the walking?

Walking effort is generally light to moderate.

  • Most birding is done from roads or short walks
  • No long hikes are required
  • Terrain can be uneven in some areas (rocky slopes, wetlands edges)

This tour is suitable for most birders with a basic level of fitness, but high altitude can make short walks feel more demanding.

🚐 How much driving is involved?

This is a road-based tour, and some days include longer transfers.

Approximate daily driving times:

  • Day 1: 6–7 hours
  • Day 2: 2–3 hours (short transfers between birding sites)
  • Day 3: 4–6 hours
  • Day 4: minimal driving
  • Day 5: 5–6 hours

All travel is done by private vehicle with regular stops.

🌡️ What weather conditions should I expect?

Weather conditions vary significantly with altitude:

  • Coastal areas: mild and dry
  • Mid elevations: warm during the day, cooler mornings
  • High Andes: cold, especially early morning (often near freezing)

Wind can be strong in exposed high-altitude areas.

🛏️ What is the level of accommodation?

Accommodation is simple but functional, especially in Junín, where options are limited due to the remote location.

Rooms are clean and comfortable, but travelers should not expect luxury standards in high-Andean areas.

🐦 How difficult are the target species?

This is a target-oriented birding tour.

  • Some species are reliable (e.g., Junin Grebe, Great Inca Finch)
  • Others require more effort and favorable conditions (e.g., Junin Rail, Black-breasted Hillstar)

The itinerary is designed to maximize success rates, but some species cannot be guaranteed.

🧠 Is this tour suitable for beginner birders?

This tour is best suited for:

  • Intermediate to advanced birders
  • Travelers with an interest in endemics and high-Andean species

While beginners can enjoy the tour, the focus is on specific targets rather than general bird diversity.
