Trip Outline
If you’re an experienced birder, targeting the rare, the local, and the hard-to-find endemics in one of the most endemic-rich regions on Earth—this tour was made for you.
This tour was crafted especially for those who have already birded the cloud forests of South America and are no longer chasing widespread species and now seek something far more specific: endemics, near-endemics, range-restricted rarities, and hard-to-find specialties that are often missed on broader itineraries. ENDEMIC QUEST is our «Megas Tour» — an expertly designed route through some of the most biodiverse and endemic-rich habitats on the continent.
This unique journey will take you across Northern Peru’s most distinctive biogeographic regions: from the Equatorial Dry Forest and Pacific coast, to the inter-Andean dry valleys of the Marañón, the Valleys of Utcubamba and into the humid eastern slopes of the Andes, exploring elfin forest, cloud forest, and the highlands of Cajamarca. Few trips offer access to such a varied array of habitats in a single sweep — and with such a sharp focus on high-value target species.
We’ll seek Flagship Peruvian endemics such as: Marvelous Spatuletail, Long-whiskered Owlet, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, White-winged Guan, Peruvian Plantcutter, Royal Sunangel, Gray-bellied Comet, Napo Sabrewing, Koepcke’s Hermit, Rusty-tinged Antpitta, Ochre-fronted Antpitta, Leymebamba Antpitta, Chestnut Antpitta, Pale-billed Antpitta, Chachapoyas Antpitta, Marañón Crescentchest, Chinchipe Spinetail, Little Inca-Finch, Buff-bridled Inca-Finch, Gray-winged Inca-Finch, Yellow-faced Parrotlet, Johnson’s Tody-Flycatcher, Rufous-vented Tapaculo, Speckle-chested Piculet, Black-bellied Tanager, Utcubamba Tapaculo, Painted Manakin, Peruvian Wren, Coppery Metaltail, Marañon Tyrannulet, Peruvian Tyrannulet, Mishana Tyrannulet, Tumbes Tyrannulets, and many more.
Alongside these targets, we’ll also enjoy regular encounters with species such as Yungas Manakin, Golden-headed Manakin, Blue-rumped Manakin, Bar-winged Wood-Wren, Cinnamon-breasted Tody-Tyrant, Blue-browed Tanager, Green-throated Tanager, Foothill Screech-Owl, Foothill Schiffornis, Blackish Pewee, Dotted Tanager, and even a cave full of Oilbirds. There’s also a chance to observe the still undescribed-for-science Yungas Woodcreeper. We will also visit several hummingbird and tanager feeders throughout the trip to maximize photographic and observational opportunities.
The adventure begins in coastal Chiclayo (just a one-hour flight from Lima), then climbs through the dry western Andes, entering the heart of Marañón and Utcubamba valleys, famous for their exceptional endemism. From there, we ascend to elfin and cloud forest habitats on the humid eastern slope of the Andes, even descending briefly to the Amazonian foothills, before concluding the expedition in the highlands around Cajamarca.
Thanks to excellent road conditions and carefully selected birding spots, we can comfortably explore coastal, montane, and Amazonian ecosystems by car — no roughing it required. Our itinerary strikes a balance between intensity and comfort, allowing us to record a vast number of endemics and rarities in a limited number of days — at an unbeatable price point.
Though our ENDEMIC QUEST: Tumbesian, Pacific, Marañónic & Andean Slopes birding trip follows a carefully curated route, we’re more than happy to adapt the plan to meet your specific targets, budget, or timeframe.
