For many years, Plataforma (also known as Flor de Café) has been surrounded by a certain myth among birders — a remote, difficult-to-access location with long travel times and challenging conditions. While this may have been true in the past, the reality today is very different.
Located in the foothills of northeastern Peru, Plataforma has become one of the most exciting and accessible birding destinations in the country, offering a unique combination of rare endemic species, excellent forest conditions, and authentic field experience.
For medium to advanced birders, this site represents one of the most rewarding birding experiences in Peru.

Where is Plataforma (Flor de Café)?
Plataforma (Flor de Café) is a small coffee-growing village located in the San Martín region of Peru, within the buffer zone of the Cordillera Azul National Park.

The area lies between the Huallaga and Ucayali river systems, in a transitional zone between lowland Amazon rainforest and Andean cloud forest. This unique position creates ideal conditions for a high diversity of foothill and montane bird species.
Access and Travel Logistics (Updated Reality)
One of the most common misconceptions about Plataforma is the idea that reaching it involves an extremely long and difficult journey.
Most reports are outdated and often describe:
- 7 – 10 hour drives from Tarapoto
- severely degraded roads
- highly unpredictable access

However, more recent experiences show a different reality:
- Road conditions have improved significantly in the last few years
- Travel time is typically much more efficient depending on weather and effective for good birding
- In good conditions, access can be smoother than expected
The journey generally includes:
- A drive from Tarapoto to Bellavista (good paved road) for 2.5 hours
- A continued ascent toward Plataforma on rural roads for 3 hours
- Birding opportunities along the way
👉 Important:
Access still depends on weather conditions, but it is no longer the extreme logistical challenge it once was.
